Ludlow Castle
Begun in 1085 by Roger de Montgomery, Earl of Shrewsbury. Largely ruins now, but steeped in history. The "Princes in the Tower" were kept here before they were removed to the Tower of London, and it was here that Prince Arthur died, leaving the throne to his younger brother Henry VIII.

Middleham Castle
A mighty fortress on a rise of land between the rivers Cover and Ure. In the Middle Ages Middleham Castle was the power base of the Neville family. After the Battle of Barnett in 1471 the castle was seized by the crown. The castle was finally slighted (made unusable) during the English Civil War. Today only the keep and castle walls survive to give an idea of how imposing this great fortress must have been in its heyday.

Morpeth Castle
The first castle in the historic market town of Morpeth was built in the 11th century, as part of the Norman expansion of control over the north of England. That early motte and bailey castle was demolished in 1215 and almost nothing now remains. A second castle was built on the same site in the early 14th century by Lord Greystoke. That castle, too, has suffered from the passage of time, and only earthworks and minimal foundation walls now remain of the castle itself. Sections of the curtain wall remain, as well as the much restored gatehouse.

Newark Castle
The largest gateway of any castle in England graces this largely 12th century castle. The castle belonged to King John, and it was here that he died in 1216 after his infamous "surfeit of peaches". Do not confuse this Newark Castle with the similarly named castle in Glasgow, Scotland.

Norham Castle
An imposing Norman castle built on the banks of the River Tweed around 1121 by Ranulf Flambard, the powerful Bishop of Durham. The castle stands on the site of a much earlier prehistoric fort. Over the centuries Norham was visited by monarchs of both England and Scotland on numerous occasions, including King John and Edward I of England, and William the Lion and John Balliol of Scotland. Norham was the most powerful in the north, and as a result it suffered Scottish sieges on no less than 13 occasions. It withstood all except the last; in 1513 James IV battered Norham into submission with his artillery.

Norwich Castle
William the Conqueror built the first castle atop a high mound in 1067, using the townsfolk as forced labour. The present Norwich Castle was built 60 years later. The castle is now a museum housing local art, silver, glass, and porcelain, as well as archaeological remains and armour.
