 Launceston Castle

A mighty Norman fortress looming over Launceston atop a natural mound. The castle was originally called Dunheved, and was built to control the crossing of the River Tamar in and out of Cornwall. In the 13th century Richard, Earl of Cornwall rebuilt the castle in stone, and fortified the central tower. The castle was used for many years as an assizes and gaol.

Lewes Castle and Barbican House Museum

Imposing Norman castle in the very centre of historic Lewes, begun by William de Warenne shortly after the Norman invasion in 1066. Lewes Castle was not completed until three centuries had passed. Unusually, there are two baileys surrounding a single motte. The castle is composed of a shell keep with octagonal corner towers, and a striking 14th century barbican. Barbican House is home to an enjoyable museum telling the tale oof the castle and the history of Lewes.

 Middleham Castle

A mighty fortress on a rise of land between the rivers Cover and Ure. In the Middle Ages Middleham Castle was the power base of the Neville family. After the Battle of Barnett in 1471 the castle was seized by the crown. The castle was finally slighted (made unusable) during the English Civil War. Today only the keep and castle walls survive to give an idea of how imposing this great fortress must have been in its heyday.

 Morpeth Castle

Morpeth Castle The first castle in the historic market town of Morpeth was built in the 11th century, as part of the Norman expansion of control over the north of England. That early motte and bailey castle was demolished in 1215 and almost nothing now remains. A second castle was built on the same site in the early 14th century by Lord Greystoke. That castle, too, has suffered from the passage of time, and only earthworks and minimal foundation walls now remain of the castle itself. Sections of the curtain wall remain, as well as the much restored gatehouse.

 Newark Castle

The largest gateway of any castle in England graces this largely 12th century castle. The castle belonged to King John, and it was here that he died in 1216 after his infamous "surfeit of peaches". Do not confuse this Newark Castle with the similarly named castle in Glasgow, Scotland.

 Norham Castle
We had the pleasure of visiting here, and our information is based on our personal experiences We took some photos of this location that we'd like to share with you

Norham Castle An imposing Norman castle built on the banks of the River Tweed around 1121 by Ranulf Flambard, the powerful Bishop of Durham. The castle stands on the site of a much earlier prehistoric fort. Over the centuries Norham was visited by monarchs of both England and Scotland on numerous occasions, including King John and Edward I of England, and William the Lion and John Balliol of Scotland. Norham was the most powerful in the north, and as a result it suffered Scottish sieges on no less than 13 occasions. It withstood all except the last; in 1513 James IV battered Norham into submission with his artillery.
