Doddington Hall
An Elizabethan house of red brick, probably the work of Robert Smythson, who was also responsible for Hardwick and Longleat. A mix of rooms, ranging from intimate to bleak, is on display. At least as fascinating as the house is the story of its past. The Delaval family inherited in the mid 18th century, and the last of the line, Sarah Delaval, bequeathed the house to her paramour instead of her husband, (whose response must have been unprintable to say the least!) and so the estate passed to the Jarvis family, who own it still. Ah, love!

Edmondsham House and Gardens
An elegant Tudor house with Georgian additions standing in over 6 acres of lovely gardens featuring rare trees and colurful Spring bulbs. The house was built in 1598 for Thomas Hussey, using local brick to create a striking Dutch-style residence. Hussey's descendant, John Fry Hussey, added the two flanking wings between 1740-1750, also using Flemish or Dutch gables. In 1837 the Tudor brickwork frontage was remodelled with stucco rendering to create the look we see today.

Englefield House
Englefield House is a superb Elizabethan mansion, with 18th and 19th century remodelling. The house is built loosely on the traditional Elizabethan E-plan, though there is much asymmetry about the design. No one seems sure quite when the house was built, but it is likely that the house actually predates the Elizabethan period. The Englefield family goes back vastly further; they are thought to have been lords of the manor here since the 9th century.

Gawsworth Hall
Gawsworth Hall began as a Norman manor, though that early house was replaced in 1485 by a half-timbered manor built around a courtyard. The mound that once held the Norman house now boasts only the tiny chapel, built in 1369 and still in use, though it has been much remodeled, with stained glass by Edward Burne-Jones and William Morris. The present house retains the Tudor half-timbering so often encountered in Cheshire houses, but the Elizabethan core has been heavily altered over the years.
