Braithwaite Hall is a lovely old 17th century farmhouse set in the beautiful countryside of the Coverdale Valley. The interior features period panelling, fireplaces, and an oak staircase with solid plank treads. The Hall was built in 1667, of rubble dresed with ashlar beneath a slate roof. It is two stories high with an attic above, and laid out on a E plan with a pair of projecting wings.

There is also a sizeable collection of artefacts associated with Cromwell. The owners of Farnley Hall were (and still are, as of this writing) the Fawkes family, who are distantly related to Guy Fawkes.

Gilling Castle began as a fortified manor house in the 14th century. The foundations of that early building form the cellar of the current structure, created by Sir William Fairfax in the late 16th century. The Elizabethan building was later expanded and remodelled by Viscount Fairfax of Emley in the 18th century, with the aide of architect Sir John Vanbrugh (or perhaps James Gibbs). The castle is now home to St Martins, a prep school for Ampleforth College.
