British Biography
Our look at the lives of famous people in art, architecture, science, and literature.
Ramsey, Cambridgeshire, England
At the height of its influence in the Middle Ages, Ramsey Abbey was one of the most powerful and wealthy monasteries in England. The superbly carved 15th-century abbey gatehouse is the most visible reminder of this bygone wealth. The gatehouse stands at one end of a wide green, giving access to Ramsey Abbey School, which now occupies the abbey site. The exterior of the gatehouse is wonderfully carved, with oriel windows and detailed decoration.
