Chatsworth
Travel Information and nearby accommodation
One of the true treasure houses of Britain, set in extensive parklands, home of the Dukes of Devonshire. Begun as an Elizabethan mansion by Bess of Hardwick, rebuilt starting in 1686. Everything is on a massive scale, opulent and designed to impress (it does). Too much art and furniture to mention.
Garden: 300 years of gardens at Chatsworth have produced a prodigious 100 acres of different styles. Cascade and canal pond from the 17th century. Woodland park created by Capability Brown in the 18th century remains unaltered. Terrace, greenhouse, rose garden, conservatory garden, arboretum, pinetum, rockery, fountain with 276 foot high water jet, and on and on.
