An Elizabethan house of red brick, probably the work of Robert Smythson, who was also responsible for Hardwick and Longleat. A mix of rooms, ranging from intimate to bleak, is on display. At least as fascinating as the house is the story of its past. The Delaval family inherited in the mid 18th century, and the last of the line, Sarah Delaval, bequeathed the house to her paramour instead of her husband, (whose response must have been unprintable to say the least!) and so the estate passed to the Jarvis family, who own it still. Ah, love!
