Hardwick Hall
Travel Information and nearby accommodation
"Hardwick Hall, more glass than wall", describes the effect this house had on its amazed contemporaries. A lasting monument to the remarkable Bess of Hardwick, Countess of Shrewsbury, whose initials and crest are displayed prominently on the window-bestrewn exterior. Contents of the house have survived largely intact since it was built in 1590.
Garden: Look for the Whiteface Woodland sheep and Longhorn cattle in the country park, or enjoy a quiet stroll through the walled courtyards which enclose formal gardens, orchard, and herb garden.
