The city of Exeter is the largest and most important urban area in Devon. The city boasts an extraordinary array of historic buildings packed into its central core, from medieval to the Regency period. Exeter Cathedral is one of the finest medieval buildings in England, with superb stone carvings. The Guildhall dates to the 15th century, on even older foundations.

Visitors can explore the vaulted 14th century underground passages constructed to hold lead pipes for the city's fresh water. The ruins of Norman Rougemont Castle can still be viewed.
