Baddesley Clinton
Moated manor of brick, stone, and half-timber construction, built around a small courtyard garden. Origins in the 13th century; the present house is largely Elizabethan. Not one but two hiding holes for priests (they were apparently needed, and in dramatic circumstances).

Basildon Park
This beautiful Palladian mansion was built in 1776-83. The interior is notable for its original delicate plasterwork and elegant staircase, as well as the unusual Octagon Room. The house fell on hard times early in the last century but was rescued and restored by Lord and Lady Iliffe, who filled it with fine pictures and furniture. The early 19th-century pleasure gardens are currently being restored and there are way-marked trails through the parkland.

Beaulieu
Beaulieu has a bit of something for everyone; an informal, homely mansion built upon the ruins of a medieval abbey, and the world famous National Motor Museum. Beaulieu Palace has intriguingly transformed the 14th century Great Gatehouse of Beaulieu Abbey into a comfortable family home beside the River Beaulieu. The major architect of the Victorian Gothic house you see today was Sir Arthur Blomfield, who transformed the earlier medieval building for Lord Henry Scott.

Belsay Hall and Garden
There are not one but three attractions to see at Belsay. The most prominent is Belsay Hall, a lovely mansion built in the early 19th century by Sir Charles Monck, a member of the Middleton family who were also responsible for the nearby castle and mansion house. Monck was greatly inspired by a visit to Greece, and he created his grand house in classical Greek Revival style inspired by the Temple of Theseus in Athens.

Belvoir Castle
A romantic (fake) Gothic collosus atop a rocky tor. Begun in 1801 by James Wyatt for the 5th Duke of Rutland. When Wyatt died the bulk of the work was executed by the John Thoroton, whose primary credential for the job was his position as the family chaplain. Fantastic painted ceiling, and a collection of paintings by Gainsborough, Holbein, and the ubiquitous Reynolds. A sumptuous display.

Blenheim Palace
Can one really call Blenheim a "house"? This place is massive, overwhelming, ostentatious, and amazing for all that. A gift from the grateful Queen Anne to John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, for his victory over the French at the Battle of Blenheim in 1704. Designed by Vanbrugh, and completed by Hawksmoor, with grounds by Capability Brown. Birthplace of Winston Churchill. Take your time, there's an awful lot to take in.

Boston Manor House
A rare glimpse of the past in modern Brentford, Boston Manor is a fine Jacobean house, created in 1623 for Lady Mary Reade. Lady Reade later married Sir Edward Spencer (see Althorp House). The plasterwork adorning the State rooms is excellent. Over 80 paintings from the collection of the London Borough of Hounslow are on display. The house is set in lovely parkland.

Bramall Hall
The house is a superb example of Cheshire "black and white" half-timbering, and one of the largest timber-framed houses in the northwest. The core of the house was built in the 14th century, with later Tuor and Jacobean additions around a central courtyard. The final effect, almost self-consciously romantic, is the result of a Victorian rebuilding program. There are fine Tudor rooms, though they are sparsely furnished, but at least this allows good views of the period plasterwork, the original timber roof in the solar, and 16th century wall paintings throughout. In addition the Victorian kitchen and servants' quarters have been restored.

Bramham Park
Bramham Park was built in 1698 by Robert Benson, the 1st Lord Bingley. It was Lord Bingley who was responsible for laying out the extensive landscape gardens around the house which make a visit to Bramham such a delight. The gardens epitomise the transition between the formality of 17th c European gardens such as Versailles, and the informality of later English landscape gardens. The house was built by an unknown architect in the style of a 16th c Florentine villa.

A Tudor manor house on the edge of the New Forest, Breamore was built in 1583 for the Dodington family. It was later the home of Edward Hulse, doctor to Queen Anne, George I, and George II. The house boasts a collection of 17th and 18th century portraits, period furniture, porcelain, and fine art. In the grounds is the Mizmaze, a turf maze of medieval origin.

Brodsworth Hall
One of the best examples of an unaltered Victorian country house in England. Brodsworth Hall was built in the 1860s by Italian Chevalier Casentini for Charles Thellusson. Casentini's design was actually executed by the English architect Philip Wilkinson, amd Casentini himself never saw the house. It is possible that Thelusson's choice of an Italianate design was influenced by Queen Victoria's equally Italianate Osborne House, on the Isle of Wight.

Buckland Abbey
The former home of Sir Francis Drake, Buckland Abbey was founded in 1278 by the Cistercian order of monks, the last Cistercian foundation in England. As with most Cistercian foundations, the abbey is located in a secluded location, making it one of the more enjoyable historic houses to visit in Devon. In addition to Drake memorabilia, an Elizabethan garden has been established at Bucklands, plus an aromatic herb garden, and there are enjoyable walks through the secluded estate.
