York, St Olave's Church

Founded in the late Saxon period by Siward, Earl of Northumberland, and later the first home of St Mary's Abbey. St Olave's was the first church in the world dedicated to the saint, and once formed part of the abbey entrance gates. Tradition says the tower was used as a gun platform in the Civil War.
