Brayford Pool
The historic waterfront area of Lincoln marks the point where the Roman Fossdyke meets the River Witham to link Lincoln to the sea. Attractive walkways now line the Pool area, which is known for its population of mute swans. Near Brayside is the 15th century Witch and Wardrobe pub, which is - apparently - haunted by a pair of ill-fated lovers, and a playful poltergeist.

Ellis Windmill
A restored 18th century windmill, one of 9 that used to stand on the high ridge of the Lincoln Edge. The mill was built in 178 and continued in operation until the 1940s. After many years standing derelict it has been restored to fully working order. Volunteer guides show visitors around the mill on weekends in summer, and at other times. See the Museum of Lincolnshire Life website for details of opening times.

Gainsthorpe Medieval Village
An abandoned medieval village; one of the best preserved village sites in England. Gainsthorpe was mentioned in the Domesday Book, and in 1208 it was recorded as having a windmill and chapel. The last reference to the village was in 1383. Further references in the late 17th century indicate that the village was deserted by that time, but remains of over 200 buildings were visible.

Greyfriars
The oldest Franciscan church building in England, Greyfriars originally served as the infirmary hall for the monks who formed one of four friaries in medieval Lincoln. The friary was begun around 1237, and completed about 40 years later. Today it is used for regular exhibitions of Lincolnshire archaeology and local history.

High Bridge
A unique medieval treasure, High Bridge spans the River Witham near the bottom of High Street in Lincoln. The bridge is the oldest medieval bridge in England that still has houses built upon it. The majority of the space on High Bridge is occupied by a restored half-timbered building dating to the Jacobean period.

Jews Court
A lovely stone building, probably dating to the 17th or possibly the 18th century. The building takes its name from the fact that a synagogue stood near the site in the early Middle Ages. An alternative theory is that Jews Court is actually built upon the site of a 12th century synagogue. Beside Jews Court is Jews House, an 11th century building which may be the oldest occupied house in Europe.

Jews House
A lovely stone building, possibly the oldest occupied house in Europe. Jews House was built around 1150 and takes its name from the fact that it was owned by a Jewish woman named Bellaset in the late 13th century. Jews House is located on cobbled Steep Hill, the historic route from lower Lincoln to the Cathedral and Castle.

Norman House, Lincoln
A lovely old Norman building, one of the oldest in the country originally built for habitation. Norman House was built in the late 12th century, and was thought for many years to have been the home of the wealthy Jewish financier, Aaron of Lincoln. This is now thought to be unlikely. The building is now occupied by a shop.

Priory Gate
Priory Gate marks the location of one of the old medieval gates that gave access to the close surrounding Lincoln Cathedral. The current gateway, which straddles the north end of Pottergate, is a Victorian structure replacing the earlier medieval gateway here. The gate stands a few short steps away from a statue of Alfred, Lord Tennyson, a Lincolnshire native.
