Yorkshire Travel Guide - Towns and Villages

  Adel

Adel is a small village near Leeds. The village is notable for its superlative Norman church, with an elaborately carved door and chancel arch. Though small, Adel is an almost perfect example of a Norman church. A mile outside the village is the site of a Roman camp and villa, and Roman finds are displayed in a small museum near the church. Just 4 miles away is the stately home of Harewood House.

  Ampleforth

A small village on the southern border of the North York Moors National Park. By far the most interesting building in Amleforth is the parish church of St Hilda, which dates back to Saxon times, and contains much later Norman work. Just 2 miles distant is Byland Abbey, while the more famous medieval monastery of Rievaulx Abbey is only 4 miles away.

  Askrigg

A small village in Upper Wensleydale, in the very heart of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, Askrigg is famous for its association with fictional vet James Herriot. Askrigg played the part of Darrowby in the television series All Creatures Great and Small. The parish church of St Oswald dates to 1488 and is built in Perpendicular Gothic style. Nearby is Nappa Hall, a 15th century fortified manor that was used to imprison Mary Queen of Scotts. The cobbled market place has an iron bull-ring, where bulls were 'baited' (i.e. set upon by dogs) in the 17th and 18th centuries.

  Aysgarth

Aysgarth A small village in Upper Wensleydale, famous for its series of lovely waterfalls. There are three falls, the upper of which was featured in the film, Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves, with Kevin Costner. There are signposted walks along the River Ure, and the woods are covered in bluebells in Spring. There is a National Park Centre at Aysgarth, with information about walking trails in the area. The church of St Andrew, which is located beside the river, has the largest churchyard in England.

  Barnsley

A large town in southern Yorkshire, Barnsley was for many years a centre of the coal mining industry. Daniel Defoe, writing in the 17th century, called it 'Black Barnsley'. The Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council operates Canon House Museum, a 17th century country house and landscaped gardens which houses a museum of fine and decorative arts. Just 3 miles away is Wentworth Castle, a restored 18th century Grade I listed garden, replete with ornamental follies. Also nearby are the partial remains of Monk Bretton Priory, a 12th century monastery.

  Beck Hole

A small, quiet village in the heart of the North York Moors National Park, close to Goathland. The village can only be reached by a steep lane, which means that it escapes the worst of the tourist hordes, leaving those who venture to find it the pleasure of discovering a peaceful village untouched by the bustle of nearby neighbours. The disused railway line linking Goathland with Grosmont runs through Beck Hole. The railway is now a popular walking trail known as the Rail Trail. Just over two miles distant are the remains of an ancient track known as Wheeldale Roman Road, though the road may predate the Romans.

  Bedale

A popular market town in north Yorkshire, Bedale boasts a striking fortified church tower, built to defend against Scottish invasion. The church dates back to the Saxon era, but there is ample evidence of Roman occupation before that. The market dates back to 1251 when Henry III granted Bedale a royal charter. A unique bit of heritage is provided by Leech House, an unusual small building beside Bedale Beck. Leech House was built by a 17th century apothecary as a storehouse for his leeches, which formed a central part of contemporary medical practice. Just 3 miles away are the remains of Snape Castle, home of Catherine Parr, last wife of Henry VIII.

  Beverley

The chief market town in the East Riding of Yorkshire, Beverley is justifiably known for the superb Beverley Minster church. The Minster is easily the equal of many of England's finest cathedrals. The Minster features an ornate medieval shrine to the powerful Percy family. The parish church of St Mary is worth vising as well; the height of its tower equals that of the Minster. Within St Mary's is the beautiful 'Minstrel Pillar', with a carving featuring 5 musicians, which dates to 1520. One of the Beverley's medieval gates survives.

  Boroughbridge

A small town north of York, Yorkshire. Just outside the town is Aldborough, site of the Roman town of Isurium. To the west of Boroughbridge are the so-called Devil's Arrows; three huge prehistoric standing stones. In 1323 Boroughbridge was the site of a battle between Edward II and the Duke of Lancaster, in which the former emerged victorious. Three miles away is the stately home of Newby Hall.

  Bradford

A large town, formerly a centre of the textile industry during the Industrial Revolution. Few medieval buildings survived the growth of Victorian Bradford; among those that did are the cathedral (formerly the parish church) and Bolling Hall, now a museum. On the subject of museums, there are several major museums in the Bradford area, among them the National Media Museum, the Colour Museum, and, a bit further away, the Yorkshire Mining Museum.
