Garden Highlights
Three acres of landscaped gardens are laid out around a working farm in a glorious countryside setting near Fishguard. The location is simply stunning, with views towards the Preseli Hills.
The gardens combine plants to offer colour from spring through autumn, with conifers mixing with flowering shrubs, colourful herbaceous borders, spring bulbs, and beds of alpine plants.
Wander beside a mountain stream and enjoy raised herb beds and a series of quiet ponds. There are strategically located seats so visitors can stop and soak in the wonderful views. There are several walks through the surrounding countryside so you can enjoy the wonderful scenery of the Gwaun Valley, with woodland and streamside trails.
The gardens are usually open dawn until dusk from early spring through autumn, and for special pre-booked times outside that period. Since the garden is part of the Penlan Uchaf Farm, you can also purchase farm-fresh produce and meat, ands enjoy home-baked cakes and tea in the Farmhouse teashop.
Getting There
Penlan Uchaf is signposted of the B4313 about 5 miles south-east of Fishguard. The road is quite narrow, and winds through beautiful countryside. The garden is located up a very steep driveway off the minor road. There is a small parking area near the cafe.
We arrived on a dull, overcast day in July, with drizzle in the air. We were the only people in the gardens - not too surprising - but even in the misty, overcast weather the views over the Gwaun Valley were amazing. There are two areas to the garden, separated by the farm drive. Above the drive, a long arbor leads to open lawns bounded by flower beds.
Below the drive, the gardens open out to give outstanding views over the valley below, with curved benches to relax and take advantage of the scenery.
