The Story Behind the Images - Castles in England
According to my calculations, I've photographed 185 English castles over the past few decades of exploring England. Add to that a few dozen historic houses that call themselves 'castle' and the total is well over 200.
Most of these castles are incredibly picturesque, and most are at least partly ruinous, though a handful are still family homes.
It is so hard to pick my favourites out of all those castles but there are a few that stand out due to their incredibly scenic and picturesque locations.
Probably THE most outstanding castle to photograph in England is St Michael's Mount in Cornwall, with its cobbled causeway that can only be crossed at low tide. I've photographed St Michael's Mount on numerous occasions and it always calls me back for more! To stand on the causeway as the sun goes down is sheer bliss. Just don't forget your wellies!
Another firm favourite is Bamburgh Castle in Northumberland. Bamburgh is so accessible, with a long beach of golden sand. Come in the evening when the tide is out and the view is amazing.
Then there's Corfe Castle in Dorset, which rises above the mist early in the morning like a fairy tale fortress. I could go on and on, but those are probably the most scenic castles I've had the pleasure of photographing in England.
