The Story Behind the Images - Cairngorms
The Cairngorms take in one of the most beautiful areas in Scotland (in my very biased opinion). At the centre of the region is the ski area of Cairn Gorm, centred around Aviemore, Scotland's version of a winter resort. This area is simply glorious in winter or in autumn when the colours are at their most vibrant.
Many of my photos of the Cairngorms come from a wonderful week I spent based at Nethy Bridge, near Loch Garten (famous for its osprey centre). If you love the outdoors, you'll love Loch Garten and the Abernethy forest, a wonderful area of ancient Caledonian pinewoods.
The Cairngorms boast some lovely inland lochs, including Loch Mallachie (excellent for sunset photos) and Loch Pityoulish, but perhaps my favourite is Loch Morlich, with views towards the looming bulk of Cairn Gorm.
There's history, too, with the picturesque Georgian fortress of Ruthven Barracks, and a medieval castle ruin on a small island in Loch an Eilean, on the Rothiemurchus estate. On the southern fringes of the Cairngorms is Balmoral Castle, the royal family's Highlands retreat. If you travel west along Royal Deeside from Balmoral you come to the Linn o' Dee, a dramatic gorge favoured by Queen Victoria as a picnic spot.
I think my favourite time of the year to visit the Cairngorms is in the autumn, but, honestly, any time is wonderful!
