The Story Behind the Image - Ruthven Barracks
One of the most memorable photography trips in my life was a week I spent near Nethy Bridge, in the Cairngorms National Park, in the last week of October, just as the autumn colours were giving way to winter frost and the first few flakes of snow.
I was photographing at Feshiebridge late one afternoon, and I was planning on heading south to catch historic Ruthven Barracks as the sun went down. Just as I started heading for the Barracks, snow started falling, sweeping across the road in gentle sheets of white. The further south I went in the direction of Kingussie and Ruthven Barracks the heavier the snow got.Any sensible person would have turned around and headed north to the safety of dry roads and a warm cottage. I've never been accused of being sensible when it comes to photography, however, so with trepidation I continued on to the Barracks.
Not surprisingly, it was deserted, and as I set up my tripod the snow was starting to whip across the landscape. The combination of the snow and the lights illuminating the Barracks was unforgettable.
I only had time for a handful of photos, carefully shielding my camera lens from the snow, before common sense told me I needed to get out of there before I was trapped for the night by the snow. I made it back to the safety of my cottage and a warm cup of coffee. This photo is the result of my excursion through the snow.
