Loch Morlich, Cairngorms

The Story Behind the Image - Loch Morlich

One of the most memorable photography trips in my life was a week I spent near Nethy Bridge, in the Cairngorms National Park, just as autumn was giving way to winter. What a glorious natural landscape!

One of my favourite locations during that wonderful week of photography was Loch Morlich, near Rothiemurchus. The loch is located on the main route to the ski area on Cairn Gorm itself and I could see the skiers' chairlift from the shore of the loch.

On this particular occasion, a fresh fall of snow dusted the tops of the mountains and the low, marshy ground near the loch shore. I was so excited to photograph the loch and the fresh snow that I didn't bother changing out of the trainers I wore while driving, figuring that I could get good photos from a trail that skirted the loch.

That, in retrospect, was a poor decision. As I explored the edges of the loch I spied a dead tree, framing the distant snow-capped hills. What a great photo that would make.

So without thinking I stepped off the trail and edged closer to the tree. The ground was not nearly so frozen as I had hoped, and I soon found myself hopping from one tuft of mushy ground to the next, trying to move before I sank into the freezing-cold water beneath. I was not successful, and I took this photo with wet and extremely cold toes!
