England

The Story Behind the Images - England

When I was a boy growing up in Canada I dreamed of living in England. I've no idea why. Maybe it was a childhood spent with my head buried in books of classic tales like King Arthur and Robin Hood, or maybe it just seemed far away and romantic to me.

Whatever the cause, I always felt drawn to England, so when I was an adult and I launched Britainexpress.com it was simply an outlet for how closely I identified with England (and the rest of Britain).

When I moved to the Cotswolds with my wife and two young children several years later it was a dream come true.

For the past 16 years, our family have explored England from Land's End to Lindisfarne, the Lake District to the Norfolk Broads, and I'm still living a dream come true.

I'm endlessly enthralled by the sheer beauty of the English landscape, the stunningly beautiful scenery, and the endless sense of history that lurks around every corner. I hope these images will help bring some of that history and beauty to life.

But what was the 'Best' place to photograph in all my explorations of England?

Top 10 Photography Locations in England

I couldn't really pick a favourite English location, I love them all! But here are some of the most memorable locations for photography that stick in my memory. If you ask me tomorrow I'll probably come up with 10 different locations!

  1. Boscastle harbour, Cornwall
  2. Bamburgh Castle, Northumberland
  3. St Michael's Mount, Cornwall
  4. Ullswater, Lake District
  5. Glastonbury Tor, Somerset
  6. Anywhere along the River Thames
  7. The historic city of York
  8. The Norfolk Broads
  9. London
  10. The Cotswolds

The last item on the list is the Cotswolds - but it certainly isn't last in my heart! This is where we have lived since we first settled in England all those years ago. We love it here, and it is no wonder. Within a few minutes of our house are chocolate-box villages, historic houses and idyllic countryside walks.

A few minutes away is Bourton-on-the-Water, the 'Venice of the Cotswolds', famous for its picturesque footbridges over the peaceful River Windrush.

I can look out my office window, see that it's a nice day, throw my camera gear in the car boot and within minutes I can be photographing beautiful thatched cottages, idyllic village scenes, medieval country churches, or drystone walls meandering across English fields. Bliss!

But that's England for you; there's always someplace wonderful just around the corner.

Whether you live here like we do, or you're halfway across the world and simply want to put a beautiful English scene on your wall to enjoy, I hope these photos will mean as much to you as they did to me when I took them.
