Bristol was once the second-largest city in England after London, a testament to the prosperity brought by maritime trade. Two famous reminders of that maritime history are now popular visitor attractions; the most popular is the SS Great Britain, the first ship to use an iron hull and screw propeller. Beside it is the Matthew, the sailing ship used by John Cabot on his voyage from Bristol in 1497.
