This delightful small museum, formerly the Cambridge and County Folk Museum, is housed in a picturesque 16th-century timber-framed former coaching inn just a block north-west of Magdalene Bridge. The rambling old building, with its sloping floors and darkened timbers, is an atmospheric venue to experience the rich heritage of Cambridge and the surrounding area.
From small beginnings, the museum has grown to include a collection of over 40,000 artefacts reflecting the social history of Cambridge and its county.
The collections show in detail the everyday life of Cambridge people over the past 300 years.
Intriguing displays focus on crafts and trades, toys and games, and the perennial conflict between "town and gown" in Cambridge life. There is also a recreation of a Victorian home and a pub scene.
A regular program of temporary exhibits runs throughout the year and the museum runs a series of educational programs for young people.
While you're there
Literally around the corner is Kettles Yard gallery, and a few steps further on is the medieval church of St Peter, with a fabulous carved font. Just up the road and across the street is the medieval motte of Cambridge Castle.
