Devil's Dyke is an Iron Age earthwork on the edge of Wheathampstead village that was built to defend a tribal centre of the Catuvellauni tribe. It is traditionally said to be the site where Julius Caesar defeated the native British leader Catuvellaunus in 54 BC and has been called Britain's First Capital.
