Old Sarum photo, Old Sarum

Within the Iron Age earthworks at Old Sarum, just north of Salisbury, is a Norman castle mound and the original Salisbury Cathedral. The castle was built shortly after the Norman Conquest. The motte, or mound, has a deep moat at the base. Conflict between the monks of the cathedral and the garrison of the castle led to the monks leaving to found the current Salisbury Cathedral in 1220.
