Canterbury Cathedral photo, Black Prince's tomb

The memorial to Edward, the Black Prince (1330-1376), son of Edward III. The tomb stands on the south side of the Trinity Chapel, near Becket's shrine. The prince actually requested to be buried in his own chapel in the crypt, but this was ignored. The tomb chest is of Purbeck marble, and was probably designed by Henry Yevele, builder of the nave. The wooden tester above Edward's effigy is beautifully painted underneath with a theme of the Throne of Mercy Trinity.
