The Story Behind the Image - Dunottar Castle
I don't know which Scottish cast;e has appeared on the most calendar covers, Eilean Donan Castle in Lochalsh or Dunottar Castle in Aberdeenshire. If it isn't one it is the other, for both medieval castles are incredibly photogenic and romantic fortresses.
I was staying at a lovely holiday cottage just a mile from Dunottar Castle, determined to capture the castle in its best light (figuratively and literally).
I must have visited Dunottar four times over the course of the week, once at dawn and three times in the late evening, trying to capture the castle lit by the sun or silhouetted against a dramatic backdrop of sea and sunlight.
This photo is one of my favourites, taken from slightly south of the trail leading to the castle entrance.
I stood as close as I dared to the cliff edge and tried to get the sunlight hitting high golden grass at the edge of the cliffs. What a wonderful sight!
