The Story Behind the Image - Harlech Castle
Harlech Castle was one of Edward I's ring of imposing fortresses built to subdue the Welsh after his invasion in the late 13th century. The castle stands on a high cliff, with wonderful views to the peaks of Snowdonia in the distance.
Shall I tell a secret? This photo came about because I broke the male stereotype and asked for directions.
I visited Harlech Castle and enjoyed exploring it, and as I was leaving I thought I'd browse the castle shop. While exploring the bookshelf I came across a guidebook with a photo of the castle on the cover.
I couldn't figure out where the photographer had taken the photo from, so I asked the receptionist at the cashier's desk, and he recognised the angle of view instantly. He told me how to find the viewpoint from a small park a short walk from the castle itself. I'm glad I asked!
It took me 10 minutes to walk to the park, set up my tripod, and wait. And wait. I thought that the sun wasn't going to cooperate, but after at least 45 minutes the sky cleared and the sun broke out to give me this wonderful photo.
