The Story Behind the Image - Platform 9 3/4, King's Cross Station
A modern London icon?
Readers of the immensely popular Harry Potter books will need no introduction to Platform 9 3/4 at King's Cross Station in London. Harry and his fellow wizards boarded the Hogwarts Express from this imaginary railway platform.
So many Harry Potter fans visited King's Cross, looking for the platform that the station management decided they had to install one, just to keep the visitors happy - and to keep them out of the way of 'real' railway station users.
They found a quiet corner (very far from both platform 9 and platform 10) and installed a baggage trolley in the act of disappearing into the solid wall.
You can often find Hary Potter fans lining up to have their photo taken 'pushing' the trolley into the wall.
