The Story Behind the Images - Sutherland
Sutherland encompasses a vast area of the Scottish Highlands, taking in the entire north-east of the country and a huge swath of land stretching from the doorstep of Inverness to the west coast.
Large parts of Sutherland remain wilderness to this day, large areas of Highland moors untouched by modern civilisation and uncrossed by roads. Some of that desolation is the result of the Highland Clearances when large numbers of crofting families were forced from the lands their families had farmed for generations.
Sutherland makes up a large portion of the North Coast 500, a circular driving route starting and ending at Inverness. On the way, the route takes in a spectacular coastline.
I spent several amazing weeks touring Sutherland, based near Loch Glencoul. What an astonishingly beautiful area! I loved Loch Assynt, with the picturesque ruins of Ardvreck Castle. Another favourite location is remote Sandwood Bay, one of the most pristine beaches in Britain, accessible only by a 5-mile walk.
Probably my favourite location, however, is Quinag, a dramatic peak near Unapool. I spent several very chilly mornings waiting for the first rays of the sun to highlight the mountain peak.
