The costumes date back to the 17th century, right up to the present day, and cover not just local items but also fashion gathered from around the UK. The collection is wonderfully diverse, including not just high fashion, but items made by dressmakers, homemade clothing, and items purchased on the High Street or market stall.
There are also exhibits of fine art and crafts, plus local archaeology, including Roman finds. There is a sculpture garden surrounding the museum, and a programme of hands-on exhibits aimed at the younger generation. There are historic dolls, textiles, decorative art, as well as genealogical records for visitors interested in family history.
