When Bess of Hardwick, Countess of Shrewsbury, decided to build a grand new house on her Hardwick estates in 1590, she started from scratch, rather than renovating an older medieval manor on the site. That medieval house survives as Hardwick Old Hall, a partially ruined building, but one that retains some excellent architectural details, including some very finely crafted plasterwork. You can climb the tower of the Old Hall for excellent views across to the 'new' Hardwick Hall.
