Barnard Castle is a historic market town in Teesdale. The town grew up around an imposing 11th-century Norman castle built by Guy de Baliol and his son Barnard. On the eastern edge of town is the Bowes Museum, home to one of the finest collections of fine art in Europe, housed in a stunning Victorian mansion.

Darlington came to prominence as the location of the first commercial passenger railroad, in 1825. The Head of Steam Darlington Railway Museum displays 'Locomotion No. 1', the original steam engine used by George Stephenson for the first railway run.

Durham dates to (at least) AD 995 when monks from Lindisrfane came here bearing the relics of St Cuthbert. They built a shrine that became Durham Cathedral, and opposite the cathedral was a Norman castle that housed the Prince Bishops of Durham, veritable rulers in the north of England.
