The name Lindisfarne is often used (incorrectly) to refer to Holy Island, a tidal island off the Northumberland coast. Though the island is small, it boasts a lot of historical interest. The chief points of interest are the dramatically sited Lindisfarne Castle, rising like a beacon on a rise above the seashore, and the ruins of Lindisfarne Priory, a medieval monastery.

The most northerly of the National Parks in England, Northumberland National Park is also the least visited and the least populated, although that is due more to its location than to any lack of interesting reasons for visiting. The southern border of the park is marked by Hadrian's Wall, and some of the finest Roman sites in Britain lie within the park's borders.

Another version of the story says that Cuthbert spent several years in the cave as an anchorite hermit. The cave is on the St Cuthbert's way trail from Melrose to Lindisfarne.
