Aldborough began as a Roman town in a loop of the River Ure. The remains of the town walls and several beautifully-preserved mosaic floors can still be seen. The parish church of St Andrew dates to the 14th century but stands on the site of a Roman temple to Mercury. In front of the church is the Battle Cross, a 14th-century cross commemorating the Battle of Boroughbridge in 1322.
