Mill Gill Force is one of the Yorkshire Dales National Park's secret gems. This picturesque waterfall is easy to reach yet remains relatively unknown by most visitors. The waterfall is just 3/4 mile outside the village of Askrigg, best known as the setting for the James Herriot TV series All Creatures Great and Small.
The Route
Getting there couldn't be simpler. Facing St Oswald's Church in the village centre, take Main Street, the road to the right of the church. Main Street immediately becomes Mill Lane. Continue down Mill Lane until the end of the houses on your right and look for a signposted footpath labelled 'Mill Gill Fall Only'.
The path crosses a field, goes over a stream and past several pools. The trail rises slightly before arriving at the waterfall. The total ascent is under 150 feet and it should take any reasonably fit person no more than 15 minutes.
You can easily extend your walk to Whitfield Gill Force, about 1/2 mile further on. From Whitfield Gill there are several footpaths returning to Askrigg, making for an enjoyable circular walk.
Please be aware that, like anywhere in the Dales, the trail to Mill Gill can be muddy after heavy rain. It is always a good idea to wear good waterproof footwear and come prepared for sudden changes in the weather.
Getting There
There is a parking area off Main Street in Askrigg, and we were also able to find parking space in front of St Oswald's Church. Do take time to pop into the church, which dates to the 15th century and is full of historic interest, including a set of Romanesque piers that may have come from Fors Abbey.
