Llyn Clywedog is a manmade reservoir created to regulate water flow into the River Severn. The lake is a wonderful area for walking and there are numerous viewpoints for motorists. Just below Clywedog Dam is Bryntail Lead Mines, all that remains of the most prolific lead mines in the world.

In 1402 Welsh rebels under Owain Glyndwr routed a larger English army at Bryn Glas, or Pilleth, near Presteigne. The battle raged around Pilleth's ancient church and a viewpoint in the churchyard overlooks the battlefield. There is a mass grave of English soldiers in the churchyard.
