Bedfordshire provides sparse returns for those interested in old abbeys and priories. There are only three such remains, two of which (Dunstable and Elstow) survive principally because part of the old monastic buildings were re-used as parish churches.
The remains of a small Augustinian Priory built in 1195. The Priory is a rare surviving example of crown-post architecture, and the timber-framed roof is worth noting. The Priory also boasts medieval wall paintings and original stained glass. Limited opening; check the English Heritage website for details.

The village parish church of St Mary and St Helena evidences the long history of the site as a Benedictine founded in 1078 by Judith, niece of William the Conqueror. Once part of the nunnery church, it is unusual in maintaining a campanile, or detached bell tower, which was erected after the nunnery tower was demolished.
