One historic house towers (metaphorically) over all others in Bedfordshire. Woburn Abbey is one of the nation's great treasure houses, and it justifiable draws a huge number of visitors every year.
Luton Hoo could justifiably claim to rival Woburn, at least before it was turned into a luxury hotel. If you want to avoid the crowds of Woburn, why not opt for a visit to Wrest Park, with its formal gardens. Or see the ruins of Houghton House, thought to be the model for John Bunyan's House Beautiful.
Houghton House is a ruined Jacobean mansion reputed to be the inspiration for the 'House Beautiful' in John Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress. The mansion was built in 1621 by Lady Pembroke, sister of Sir Philip Sidney, and later owned by the Dukes of Bedford. It is now a roofless, romantic ruin.
