Bourton on the Water is a classic Cotswold beauty spot. The River Windrush flows through the centre of this lovely village. The Windrush at this point is a peaceful waterway, scarcely more than a shallow brook flowing at a gentle pace. It is spanned by a series of very low stone pedestrian bridges.

You'd think it would be hard to find an undiscovered beauty spot in the Cotswolds - so many people come each year to explore the chocolate-box villages and picturesque countryside. Yet while those visitors are drawn to popular villages like Bibury or Broadway, they miss gems like Broadwell. Broadwell has a wide village green ringed about by pretty cottages, while a quiet stream runs through the village. Around the green is a popular inn, and the parish church, which dates to the Norman period and features several intriguing historical monuments.

But it would be a shame to miss the village of Chedworth itself; it's a lovely Cotswold village, worthy of leisurely exploration. Set in a landscape of low hills, the views are wonderful; a typical Cotswold landscape of scattered stands of trees set among green fields and overgrown lanes.

Many of the Roman artefacts unearthed over the centuries are displayed in the award-winning Corinium Museum.
