Cockersand Abbey was a Premonstratensian monastery founded in 1190 from a former hermitage. The abbey stood on a low island in marshland, and was known as 'St Mary of the Marshes'. The best-remaining feature is the 13th-century semi-octagonal chapter house, which survived because it was used as a burial vault for the Dalton family of Thurnham.
