The church consists of a nave, west tower, chancel, two-storey south porch and a vestry.

Victorian churches are not everyone's cup of tea. Too often Victorian Revival 'restorers' created their own rather antiseptic version of Gothic craftsmanship and style, with none of the substance. But St Mary's church in the little village of South Dalton is an exception; a glorious, wonderful, inspired exception. I loved this church!

A large 13th-century church in Early English style, located within the earthworks of an Iron Age camp. Stanwick Camp was an important 1st-century trading and administrative centre for the Brigantes tribe. It seems almost certain that a Saxon church was established within the earthworks of the camp after the Romans left.
