The origins of St Mary's Church in Goathland go back to the late 11th century when a hermitage was founded on the Eller Beck. The stone altar slab of that hermitage survives in the Victorian church we see today. Another highlight is a 12th-century font.

An aura of history clings to All Hallows church in the pretty hillside village of Goodmanham. It was here, in this quiet spot, that one of the pivotal points in British history occurred in the year AD 627. In that year Edwin, King of Northumbria (a huge kingdom stretching from the Humber to the Firth of Forth and west to the Isle of Man) was converted to Christianity on this spot.

This delightful Georgian church stands in an isolated position with only a farm for close company. St Giles was the traditional burial place of the Constables of Wassand. It is built of a mix of cobble and brick, with a lovely west tower under a pyramidal roof which gives the church a distinct Italian aura.

There has been a church in Great Ayton since at least the 11th century and probably much earlier, but the present building dates to the 12th century. Look for a collection of 8th-century carved stones inside the church. In the churchyard is the grave of Captain Cook's mother and five siblings.

The little church of St Ethelburga at Great Givendale is magnificently situated down a wooded slope, as if hiding away from the world. It is such a peaceful place; visit once and you'll never forget it. The current church was rebuilt in 1849 by John Singleton, incorporating bits from an earlier Norman church on the site (though much of the medieval stone was cast aside and reused for road building).

A large country church looking out across farm fields, St Nicholas is almost entirely a product of the Victorian period. One of the sole concessions to earlier history is a much restored Norman tub font, with a larger early font bowl on the floor beside it. The carved bowl supposedly came from the vanished church at Argham.

St Matthew's is a Victorian Gothic church begun in 1873 to serve the growing population of Grosmont after successful ironstone mining and the coming of the railway caused a surge in the number of residents. It is a very good example of Victorian church architecture.

A fabulous Victorian Gothic church on a grand scale, built by Sir George Gilbert Scott for Halifax industrialist Edward Ackroyd beginning in 1856. Scott claimed that it was the best church he ever designed, and it is easy to see why. The soaring spire seems ready to take flight.

The wonderful historic church of All Saints is often overlooked by visitors to the stately home of Harewood House, near Leeds. That's a real shame, because All Saints is a fantastic medieval building, and it features perhaps the best collection of Elizabethan alabaster tombs in the country, commemorating the owners of Harewood and the neighbouring Gawthorpe estates.
