There are few bits of medieval London remaining intact - this is one. The gateway was built in 1504 by Prior Thomas Docwra as an entrance to the the Priory of the Knights of Saint John (the Hospitallers) in Clerkenwell. Today the gate is part of a museum dedicated to the history of the Knights of St John and their role in the development of ambulance services and medical care.
