Located within the idyllic Galloway Forest Park north of Newton Stewart is a large, shaped boulder on a hillside overlooking the waters of Loch Trool. This is Bruce's Stone, marking the site of the Battle of Trool in 1307, which saw Robert Bruce defeat an English force by clever use of what we would now call guerrilla tactics.

The Grey Mare's Tail is a spectacular 60m (200-foot) waterfall, tumbling down the deep gorge of Tail Burn from Loch Skeen to the valley of Moffat Water far below. The waterfall is just part of a National Trust for Scotland nature reserve, offering fabulous upland scenery and walking opportunities.

St Ninian's Cave is a natural cave on the southwestern coast of the Machars of Galloway, traditionally associated with St Ninian. Early Christian crosses were found in the cave (these can be seen at Whithorn Museum), and several incised crosses can still be seen carved into the cave walls.

The Wood of Cree is a nature reserve run by the RSPB, and is the largest intact area of ancient woodland in southern Scotland; a wonderful spot to hear and see birds. There are buzzards, tree pipits, pied flycatchers, barn owls, tawny owls, wallow tits, and occasional redstarts and garden warblers.
