A picture postcard Tudor house, home of the Browne family for four centuries. Not a showpiece, but an honest yeoman's home. The furnishings are unremarkable, but homely and appealing. Don't miss the servant's bedrooms tucked above the kitchen.

Wray Castle is a 19th-century mansion set in beautiful gardens on the west bank of Lake Windermere. The house was built by a wealthy Liverpool surgeon named Dr Dawson, who created a fanciful house in the 'picturesque' Victorian Gothic style. The grounds are open to the public year round, and the house during the summer months. William Wordsworth planted a tree in the garden which can still be seen.
