At first glance Dalemain appears to be a simple Georgian house, but the Georgian facade hides a much older story, for Dalemain is medieval, and has been home to the same family since 1679. The house is constructed like a hollow square, with a courtyard at the centre. The interior rooms are a mix of formal Georgian rococo style and Elizabethan wood panelling.

Hutton-in-the-Forest is a fascinating historic house in north Cumbria, begun in the middle of the 14th century. The oldest part of the house is the pele Tower, built in 1350. In the 750+ years that have passed since then, Hutton has been owned by just two familes, the de Hoton and Fletcher families. The Fletchers contributed a Victorian Gothic tower to match the medieval pele. The interiors are a fascinating mix of Regency and Victorian decooration, with original William Moris wallpaper.
