Long Compton is indeed long - it stretches along the A3400 at the foot of a hill. At the base of the hill is the attractive 13th-century church of St Peter and St Paul. The churchyard entrance is guarded by a picturesque timber-framed two-storey lych gate. Across the road are numerous attractive cottages of golden-hued Cotswold stone, some of which are thatched. Legend says that St Augustine came to Long Compton in the 6th century, and preached a sermon on the site where the church now stands.

The historic market town of Stratford upon Avon is best known as the birthplace of William Shakespeare. The dramatist was born in an unpretentious house on Henley Street in 1564 and is buried in the parish church of Holy Trinity. The schoolroom where he went reluctantly to lessons can be visited, as can the house where his daughter Susanna lived. A short walk across the fields brings you to Anne Hathaway's House, the childhood home of Shakespeare's wife.
