Crossraguel Abbey is a Cluniac monastery founded in 1244 by Duncan, heir to the Earldom of Carrick. The extraordinary thing about Crossraguel is just how much of the site is still relatively intact; the extensive ruins include the church, chapterhouse, gatehouse, dovecot, cloister and a tall tower house that offers wonderful views over the site from the top.

In AD 563 St Columba, an Irish missionary, established a monastery on the island of Iona, off the Isle of Mull. The monastery became a centre of Celtic Christianity. It was from Iona that St Aidan set out in AD 636 to establish Christianity in Northumbria, and the island's religious significance spread throughout Scotland.

Most visitors to Iona come to see the historic abbey, founded around 1200 and restored in the 20th century. However, just a short stroll from the ferry quay at Baile Mor stands the ruins of one of the best-preserved medieval nunneries in Britain. The nunnery stands beside the main pilgrim's route from the landing-place at Baile Mor along the 'street of the dead' to St Columba's shrine and the abbey.

The medieval priory may stand on the site of a 6th-century monastery established by St Oran. The beautifully preserved remains include the priory church, cloister, chapter house and refectory. The priory may have been founded by John I, Lord of the Isles.
