Ben Lomond is one of the most popular walking areas of Lowland Scotland, partly because of relatively easy access from large population centres like Glasgow, and partly because the hill walks are relatively easy, allowing people with limited outdoor skills access to a beautiful area of countryside, with superb views over the nearby Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park.

The sculpture is the work of artist Julian Meredith, and visitors are encouraged to add a stone to the sculpture and fill in any empty areas of the whale outline.

In 1887 an art teacher from Campbeltown had a vision instructing him to paint a scene of the Crucifixion on the wall of a sea cave on Davaar Island, reached only by a tidal causeway from the mainland. He painted in secret, and when fishermen found the painting they thought it was a miracle, a sign from God. The restored painting is a stunning piece of Victorian art in an unforgettable setting.
