Dominating the landscape near Auchinleck is a gigantic welded steel frame used to run two sets of winding gear for raising coal and miners from No 3 shaft at Barony Colliery. It is the only tangible reminder of the colliery, which operated from 1906-1989 and employed thousands of local men and women.
