The Story Behind the Image - Ten Penny Cottage, Welford-on-Avon
The Warwickshire village of Welford-on-Avon lies just a few miles south of Stratford-upon-Avon. The village grew up around a ford across the river and over time a cluster of thatched cottages was built beside the medieval parish church.
One of these thatched cottages is Ten Penny Cottage (sometimes known as Tenpenny Cottage), seen here. The pecular name comes from the annual rent charged to the cottage's tenant in days gone by - it would cost quite a bit more today!
Ten Penny Cottage is one of the most frequently photographed thatched cottages in England and frequently appears on calendars and tourism brochures. It was built in the 17th century and is listed Grade II by English Heritage.
