Roman sites in the Lake District
Overlooking the 2nd-century Roman fort of Alauna, on high cliffs above Maryport, is the Senhouse Roman Museum, housing objects found during excavations at the fort and surrounding civilian settlement. The museum holds the largest number of Roman altars anywhere in Britain, many of them found buried in pits by the Romans themselves.

Just west of Gilsland village a farm track leads to Willowford Farm, following the course of Hadrian's Wall. The Willowford section of the Wall stretches 2999 feet in length and includes the remains of two turrets and a Roman bridge used to carry Hadrian's Wall over the River Irthing.

On the east bank of the River Irthing stand the remains of a Roman bridge built on the line of Hadrian's Wall. The bridge is now completely on dry land, and a modern footbridge takes walkers across the river and along an extremely well-preserved section of Hadrian's Wall to Birdoswald Roman Fort a short distance away.
